PERSONALITY:
Jesse McBride gets away with everything. He can't remember a time when he's ever truly been punished for misbehavior. What started as a seemingly harmless 'boys will be boys' rhetoric from his parents eventually twisted itself around in Jesse's head until it became a full-blown invincibility complex. Growing up, his fearlessness was only inflated by his teachers, who praised him for excelling past his 'humble upbringings' and gave him far more leeway than he needed or deserved. Some might say this made him cocky, but he prefers self-assured. He's never afraid to offer up his thoughts and tends to find a way to make it seem as if he knows what he is talking about, even when he doesn't. His sisters call this the 'Jesse Effect' -- being so sure of yourself, that everyone else becomes sure of you, too.
He's an incorrigible flirt with little fear of rejection and he tends to brush off criticism with insincere self-deprecation. There isn't much that he gets worked up about and, in most cases, he prefers to walk away from conflict, rather than dig in his heels. This isn't to say he won't instigate an argument, just that he doesn't bother trying to win them. (I believe the preferred term for this type of senseless provocation is 'trolling'). This makes it very difficult for people to tell whether or not he is being serious.
His unwavering faith in himself often translates into recklessness. Jesse has a deeply addictive personality and, while he'd never admit it to himself, he is a burgeoning alcoholic. High-functioning, but an alcoholic nonetheless. He likes to drink and when he does he tends to drink A LOT. And when he drinks a lot, he can be a real asshole. It's not that he is a mean drunk, per se, just a deeply selfish one. He will do anything that he deems fun, regardless of the consequences. On his good days, this behavior makes Jesse the life of the party. He's not afraid to dance. He's the one that can get everybody to take shots. He's game for every dare and he'll cheer you on, too! But, there is no such thing as a harmless drunk, and along with his 'fun' behaviors come annoying ones. He breaks things. Teases on topics too close to home. Rough houses with people who would rather just be left alone and can't take no for an answer. He never starts his day with the intention of causing trouble, but when things begin to boil over he can't seem to stop. He lacks the emergency shut off switch that most people have that tells them, "ABORT! YOU'LL GET IN TROUBLE!"
Fundamentally, Jesse has a good heart. He doesn't mean to hurt anybody with his impulsive behaviors and is remorseful when he does. He is a loyal friend, who means well, but (like most teenage boys) struggles to show affection and emotion in a healthy way. He likes for things to be easy, fun, and not too serious. He'd rather deflect heavy conversations with humor than expose himself to the dangers of a heart2heart. Snugglebugging just isn't in his vocab, bro. It's difficult to get Jesse to admit he is wrong and even more difficult to get him to admit that he is having any sort of emotion that couldn't be described as chill.
- "You seem mad, Jesse."
"Yeah, but it's chill." - "You seem sad, Jesse :("
"Yeah, but it's chill...." - "Are you in love with her, man?!"
"Haha, yeah, but it's chill."
not very long, probably did read;
+ intelligent
+ charismatic
+ loyal
= such a fucking stereotypical boy
= self-deprecating
- alcoholic
- reckless
- cocky

HISTORY:
PARENTS: Out of a set of six siblings, Iona Sullivan was one of only two who developed magical powers. Growing up in South Buffalo, in a staunchly Irish (or so they claimed) Catholic household, the idea of being marked as a witch was frightening and for the majority of her adolescent years, Iona denied having powers she couldn't explain. That is... until she met Thomas McBride.
Tommy was a tinkerer and a dreamer with no magical gift of his own, yet he saw magic everywhere. On their first meeting, Tommy asked Iona to accompany him on a hunt for fairies. He'd never seen one, but believed with all his heart that they existed, while Iona had seen them many times and never allowed herself to believe they were more than a waking dream. In Tommy, Iona had finally found someone who she could be honest with about her growing powers and they quickly became the best of friends. With Tommy's encouragement, Iona eventually opened up to her parents about her magical abilities and was met with shockingly little surprise. Rumors of witchcraft ran on Iona's mother's side of the family and though no one could claim to be a true witch for generations, the legacy remained. (Iona was further encouraged when her younger sister, Catherine, began to show signs of magic, as well).
When Iona went away to Ilvermorny, she stayed in close contact with Tommy. They wrote one another constantly and shared everything with one another. Partially to avoid getting in trouble for breaking the Statute of Secrecy and partially because they truly loved one another, Iona and Tommy married straight out of school. By twenty-five, they had three kids, all of whom arrived in rapid succession. (Jesse and his older sister, Maeve, are Irish twins. Lila and Maeve are a near miss). Both Tommy and Iona had to work full-time to make ends meet and couldn't afford to buy a house of their own, so they moved in with Iona's parents. Technically, Iona never moved out, rather just hunkered down and sprouted a family.
EARLY LIFE: Because his parents were always at work, Jesse spent a lot of his time in the company of his siblings and his grandparents. As the baby of the family and the only boy, he was doted on by older sisters eager to play real life dolly with him. And, as we all know, grandparents love to spoil their grandkids. As a result, Jesse grew up with very little discipline in his earliest years. He was free to roam the side streets of South Buffalo until "the street lights came on." A precocious and affable child, he was popular with the neighbors and local shop keeps. Even though his father and mother were rarely around, he had a veritable cornucopia of parental figures to choose from. Jimmy Up The Street taught him how to play baseball and Jimmy Down The Street taught him how to play drums, but it was Old Man O'Doole (Odie) that peaked his interest in science.
Everyone knew everyone on East Eden Street, so no one thought twice about Jesse (and his sisters) spending every afternoon in Odie's garage. Although Iona was open about her gift with her family, magic was spoken of as an anomaly and none of the McBride children expected they would inherit it. Instead, they focused in on the magic right there in the no-maj world. A retired physics teacher and widower with no children of his own, Odie doted heavily on the McBride siblings and challenged them with complex physics experiments. After Jesse's grandfather, Sully, died of cirrhosis, Odie took on an even larger role in the young boy's life. By the time Jesse was entering grade school, he was spending every day with Odie and performing at sixth or seventh-grade levels in science and mathematics.
GRADE SCHOOL: Jesse's first experience with formal schooling was at a No-Maj Catholic Elementary, Notre Dame Academy, just up the street from his family home. He hated every second of it. The curriculum was dull, the Nuns had no sense of humor, and his distaste was only magnified by the fact that by the first grade, he was beginning to show signs of magic. Simultaneously, his sister, Maeve, was beginning to show signs of magical ability, too. Thick as thieves, it wasn't long before they began skipping school and wandering around South Buffalo. But, even in a laid back, trusting community the sight of two grade schoolers out and about on their own raised red flags. Jesse can still vividly remember the day his father caught Maeve and him in the convenience store at the end of the block and dragged them out by their ears. They both received a good old-fashioned tanning and neither could sit comfortably for a week.
Even worse than the spankings was the threat that they'd be sent away to separate All-Girls and All-Boys Catholic boarding schools, where they wouldn't be able to escape. Desperate to stay together, the McBride siblings began scheming up ways to keep close, while simultaneously avoiding the monotony of an unchallenging, no-maj school. But, of course, they were children. So what did they know?
Enter Mr. O'Doole, who once again took the wily McBride children under his wing. He exposed to Iona and Tommy that he was a wizard, as well. He brought Allegheny Prep to their attention and explained that it was where he once taught Hermeticism and Physics. A day school that specialized in both magical and muggle math and science, it seemed the perfect fit for Jesse and Maeve. The best part being that they could portkey to school and return home each day, so they wouldn't have to be apart from Lila.
ALLEGHENY PREP: With a good word from Mr. O'Doole, Jesse and Maeve were both accepted into Allegheny Prep their third and fourth-grade years, respectively. The Prep is located on the edge of Allegheny National Forest, on the border of New York and Pennsylvania. It's a public K-8, lottery school with a heavy focus on the natural sciences and, specifically, astronomy. It became immediately apparent to his teachers that Jesse was not going to be challenged by grade school material and they pulled him from his regular science classrooms to work on independent projects.
Portkeying to and from school every day peaked Jesse's curiosity about what made him capable of disappearing and reappearing somewhere else. Was there something fundamentally different in his biological makeup that would eventually allow him to apparate, when his father and oldest sister could not? Growing up in relative poverty, Jesse was bothered by the economic affordances that magical transportation allowed him, but did not allow his eldest sister. Traveling long distances was costly and time-consuming for the members of his family without magic, so they rarely left South Buffalo. Jesse, Maeve, and their mother, however, were capable of nearly unfettered access to the wonders of the globe. Beginning in the fifth grade, Jesse began assembling his first "Apparition Machine."
What started as a school project, developed into an obsession. Jesse worked tirelessly on the project, both in school and out. Over the summers, he would transport his prototype (affectionally dubbed Stella, after Mr. Odie's late wife) back home to South Buffalo. He was, essentially, meddling with the fabric of space-time out of a dinky, run down garage. The project, or Operation Pop, as he sometimes refers to it, was (and is) entirely self-funded. It wasn't long before Jesse's part-time job at the local Wegmans wasn't quite cutting it. His teachers at Alleghany Prep suggested he apply for grants to continue his research and once Jesse discovered that he could essentially secure free money he set about applying for as many grants and cash prizes as possible. Grant writing, while laborious, was no more intensive than the actual work he was putting into Operation Pop.
By the time he graduated from Alleghany Prep, Jesse had made a bit of a name for himself. He was bright, charismatic, hardworking and local newspapers loved him. He was set to transfer to Ilvermorny, as Maeve had done, but Mr. Odie suggested he look into applying to Gooseberry. The small class sizes and reputation for producing exceptional students appealed to Jesse, as did the promise of freedom. After hitting puberty, Jesse was much less concerned with staying bundled as a unit with his sisters. So, he set about applying with practiced panache and was accepted into Gooseberry as a Freshman with a full academic scholarship.
GOOSEBERRY: Jesse immediately took to life at Gooseberry. It had all the qualities he wanted in a high school.
- Dope roommates ✓
- Abundance of hot, intelligent girls ✓
- Zero parental oversight ✓
- Tons of parties ✓
- Rigorous academic program ✓
- Space to work on his project ✓
He made friends easily and established himself early as a centerpiece at Grotto parties. His freshman year, a growth spurt rocketed him from mild-mannered geek to the muscle bound freak you see before you. He was often mistaken for much older than his age and managed to weasel his way in with the older crowd, which in turn, gave him access to alcohol. His flirtation with drinking turned into a habit and by his sophomore year, he was drinking to some extent almost every day. Like his grandfather before him, Jesse kept his drinking stealthy and, despite it, managed to continue to do well in his courses. His teachers generally seemed surprised by gossip that Jesse was a party animal. The bright, charming, independently driven kid they saw before them didn't fit the mold of someone who drank at the Grotto every weekend. Only his close friends truly realized just how bad his drinking had become.
Fortunately for everybody, his main suppliers graduated at the end of his sophomore year and Jesse reigned things in a little, though not completely. With the deadline for his Senior project on the horizon, Jesse focused back in on his passion for science and fell in with a more studious crowd. He started trying to live by Quinn's 'work hard, play hard' approach, which seems to be going pretty well for him, since he was promoted to prefect at the end of his junior year. Although some of his peers joke that he was only selected because there was no one else to choose, Jesse truly thinks he was a solid pick and he takes prefecting pretty seriously. While he's certainly not a stickler for the rules, he is a sociable, thoughtful figurehead who looks out for his peers (as long as you're not a dick).
Coming into his senior year, Jesse is zeroing in on the final stages of Operation Pop. The legal issues associated with human trials have been the largest stumbling block and he has gone on several trips this year alone to speak with various MACUSA reps and showcase his plans. He's hoping that he won't have to do much more traveling, because it's causing his grades to slip and HE MISSED BOTH GROTTO PARTIES, WTF?!
[Somewhere in here, he starts or reconstructs his band, but I wanna see if current players want in on this before I flesh it out.]
SCHOOL
YEAR: Senior (Grade 12)
HOUSE: Azurcrest
SORTING: Jesse's sorting was short. He was one of the last students to be sorted and he watched carefully as his classmates were assigned their houses. He entered the cave determined NOT to be placed in Coppertale or Ebonhide, based purely on his personal algorithm of the likelihood of getting laid (damn, those redheads look mean)! Ribbonfin flat out didn't want him, though the fish made a weak offer of, "You do seem to be... a people person?" Ultimately, Jesse asked to be placed in Azurcrest and that seemed the best fit anyway, so it all wrapped up rather quickly.
WAND: 12" Hornbeam with Pokeweed stem core ;)
FAMILIAR: A much beloved hamster, Albie E, who Jesse believes is in constant peril due to Diego's owl and Hertz's cat. During the warmer months, Jesse keeps Albie in the Artificing classroom, but has to move him into the cabins during the winter. Jesse is not afraid to People's Elbow a cat in the throat if it means protecting his main man, Al.
CLASSES:
1. Charms
2. Transfiguration
3. Potions
4. Hermeticism
5. Artificing
6. Astronomy
7. Music
SENIOR PROJECT: Essentially, Jesse is trying to invent magicless apparition (or as we no-majs would call it -- teleportation). So far, this looks like two "Apparition Machines," one of which is hosted at Gooseberry (named Gus Gus) and one at his family home in Buffalo (named Stella). He's been tinkering with this project since grade school. He's pretty close to having a workable prototype, but is (obviously) having trouble finding willing no-maj beta testers. There have also been some legal issues impeding his progress and worries about breaching the International Statute of Secrecy.
Building (and rebuilding and rebuilding) his Apparition Machines has proven extremely expensive, so Jesse is constantly applying for grants and other random cash prize awards. He travels a lot to accept these awards; last spring he traveled to South America to accept second place in the Most Agreeable Face in Ecuador Pageant! He does occasionally bring Gus Gus to different locations to conduct long distance teleportation/apparition tests. Most recently, he was in the Himalayas.
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: Jesse's teleportation project is DEFINITELY going to the change the world some day (and he knows it). He is obsessed with the project and its outlying implications but tends to ignore his unrelated classes. It's not that he doesn't care about Charms or Potions or whatnot, he's just too busy with his project to focus on what he deems 'busy work.' Fortunately, he's naturally gifted and skims through most subjects with low Bs and excels astronomically in Hermeticism and Artificing. His favorite class is Astronomy, which he treats like more of a hobby than a study. In the classroom setting, he is engaged, insightful, and just the right amount of witty to make him an easy pick for teacher's pet. Gooseberry staff are unlikely to realize that he is such a problem child outside of the classroom.
EXTRACURRICULARS: Officially, none. He's tried out for cheer a few times, but Cecil & Diego always seem to get assigned as the butt touching bases and he's left to just... clap like an idiot.
He almost always shows up for gaming club and challenges people to Super Smash Bros tournaments, but claims he isn't a member. He pops into Outdoor Exploration trips from time to time, too.
